Can Your Entire House Run On Batteries?

Wouldn’t it be weird if one day in the future
you were buying a home and the listing said, “batteries not included?” Yeah well, that
could totally happen. Hey there people, Julian here for DNews. Electricity
is pretty great. It powers my toaster, my fridge, my hairdryer, my clothes dryer, my
air conditioner, my humidifier, my dehumidifier, and my pc I use to watch science youtube videos.
I think I’m gonna keep using it. The problem is, everyone in all the other houses feels
the same way, usually at about the same times of day, and they’re driving the cost of
those tasty kilowatts up in the evening. Of course during the day if you don’t want
to use power from the grid, you could get some solar panels and harvest sunlight, but
that’s not helpful when the sun’s down, also known as nighttime, also known as the
time I need to have electricity to turn lights on to not bang my shins on all the furniture. Enter the battery powered home. The idea is
a rechargeable battery stores energy from solar panels during the day or from off-peak
hours when grid energy is cheapest, and uses that energy during the rest of the day. The
problem is if you’ve ever bought batteries you know they cost approximately one arm and/or
one leg. Elon Musk thought that was a silly hangup for what is otherwise a great idea
and decided to do something about it. Elon Musk, for y’all that don’t know,
is basically what would happen if Tony Stark lost the goatee. His interests range from
online money movement to commercial space flight to, most importantly for this topic,
electric cars. His company Tesla Motors has been refining electric car batteries for years,
engineering them to be lighter, longer lasting, and more efficient. Why don’t we take all
those batteries, and put them on a wall? So they did that. The Tesla Power wall Is
basically a bunch of lithium ion cells in a sleek case. They’re compartmentalized
and liquid cooled to solve the knotty problem of overheating and burning your house down,
something that is generally undesirable. If you wanted it as your main power supply there’s
a model that can store and discharge up to 7 kWh daily and costs $3000. Best of all it
should last 10 years, which is approximately 8 years longer than my laptop battery made
it before it wouldn’t hold a charge anymore. The trick to this longevity is how much power
it outputs. It’s only pumping out 2 kW continuously and peak output is 3.3 kW. The problem that
then arises is some appliances will use more than that output. An electric clothes dryer
could draw that much power on its own. So if you want dry clothes, I hope you weren’t
planning on using a microwave too. If you wanted to be not reliant on the grid
at all, you’d probably need a few powerwalls to go with your solar roof panels. Depending
on where you live, your power consumption can vary widely, but the average US home in
2011 used 940 kWh per month. A solar setup of that size would cost over $11,000, not
including installation or taking tax credits into account. Then you’d need 5 Powerwalls
to store all of that sunshine juice, so that’s another 15 grand. It’s an expensive prospect
right now, but as the cost of batteries and solar panels continue to drop, individual
homes that are independently powered could become a great way to kick our fossil fuel
habit. Inexpensive home batteries are looking like a promising innovation. They’re not the only company innovating.

  2. It can but requires you to buy new appliances. The mistake off grid people make is trying to power their current power hungry AC items on off the grid systems. A few things kills batteries like full size fridges,freezers,Dryers,water heaters,air conditioners and pumps. Replacing most of these with propane or low power versions will allow you to run pretty much everything in your house for MUCH longer.

    If you want to only use solar /batteries then think smaller instead of full size frig mini fridge instead of full size freezer a chest freezer. Instead of a full size micro wave a mini microwave instead of a water heater use a micro wave water heater. If you don't want to use a propane drying then use natures dryer the sun…

    In other words a lifestyle adjustment is required….

  3. Great video, I started my independence earlier this year. I called the gas company to turn off my gas, which meant no hot water heat or gas for cooking. so I bought 3 AGM Deep cycle batteries 2 solar panels and a 3000 watt inverter. I saved money all winter using an electeic heater I got at BJ'S, an electric stove 2 burners and an electric shower. In all I spent less the $1000 and it's almost paid itself off by the end of the yr it would have and then some.

  4. I'll go completely off-grid if I were in Southern California. But here in rainy Seattle, that's a little bit more problematic. I'd settle for peak-shaving and not having to live in the dark during outage though.

  7. just finished cracking open a laptop battery I bought for $5 (free shipping) on eBay. Cheap HP battery with blue cells inside labeled 1800 mAh, going to meter them for actual mAh with my BT-C3100 charger.

I have 4 – 250 watt solar panels.. on the best sunny days during the summer they produce about 5 KWH.. on a cloudy day during summer they produce about 0.8 KWH… during a cloudy day in winter about 0.4 KWH.. that's enough to run 4 -100 watt lightbulbs for an hour….. do the math and find out how many solar panels you need to give you all the power you need including heat and hot water.. solar is as STUPID as WIND turbines… I have it because I do not have grid connection.. my system cost over $10,000 and I can not heat home or water or cook with it, just run some electrical things like lights and computers..

  12. If I could afford to and if provincial regulations would allow it, I would definitely want to live "off the grid" like you say with solar panels on the roof and a power wall.

  15. nobody mentions where they live .Up here in Canada the winter can be very gray. The nights are long the days are cloudy and what sun there is , comes in at a low angle, sifting through the Earth's atmosphere at a low angle losing it's power all the way. Solar won't charge enough for me. I have 16k watts coming in from the power grid. Not enough daylight.

  17. I pay roughly $2400.00 a year for electric. Granted those costs can go up. The problem is the investment into Solar, wind is expensive and the wiring to include the power panel and battery bank is expensive. Then the replacement time and cost. Potential risk for failure and hazard. I can probably forget running my air conditioning that is needed for Florida So I'm looking at a $25k to $30k investment for an average home. Which would have to take 10 years of no problem or replacement use to just get my investment back…. so it is not worth it.

  23. Mortgage companies are not keeping up with off-grid innovations. Very,VERY few will finance a house that is not hooked to the grid.

  27. This sounds good, but I think I would prefer to go solar and wind and remain on the grid, so I stand a chance of selling energy back to the grid. Also, what about water heating, central heating, and central air conditioning?

  31. I’ve got a 1.32kwh lead acid battery hooked up to a 50w solar panel and I use this to power all of my 5v devices and a few 12v ones. iPad, phone, portable charger, 3w LED etc

  32. Yes, the price of powerwalls and home solar is going to drop soooo fast that it won't be 30% of the total cost of the house within 1000 years or so. Of course that won't matter if the cost of building a typical house continues to skyrocket, since that's what supposedly makes homeowners with 5% equity feel so wealthy.

  34. You will never save enough to pay for the Powerwall if you only rely on the savings from charging it during off peak hours when the rates are a bit less and using the stored energy during the day when power is more expensive. We are talking pennies per KW hour in savings , not dollars.
    However, if you add another $18,000.00 for a 10KW DIY solar panel system using 36×330 watt solar panels, mounting hardware, wires, connectors, 10 KW inverter (grid tied) , and pay an electrician to do the hookup (legally), the combination of powerwall and solar power will cut your energy from the grid down to below 3 percent…..or, you could be able to go off grid.

    In Canada, where I am, a DIY estimate for a 10KW grid tie system without a powerwall is 22,000.00 plus electrician fees. It would result in 63% less use of grid power or $2,200.00 savings per year in my case. It's a 10 year payback minimum. Add the powerwall to get off the grid completely and it's a whopping 34,000.00 investment with a 9 year payback…..and by then you are looking at replacing your equipment unless you get lucky.

    All of this Solar equipment needs to come down to HALF the cost before people really start jumping into it. Right now it's not a viable alternative to grid power, even in Ontario where I am.

    There has to be a more cost effective way to generate and store power.

  35. Or, you could install a "power wall" and charge it early in the day from the electric grid and discharge it during peak hours.
    Another idea is solar panels that run your meter backwards all day long and forward in the evening balancing out to less forward movement.

  39. if you really want to save money on electrical power use this simple method acquire a stator that will put out the power you need and then put it on a bar and make sure the other side if shock proof and then attach a motor 120 240 with the proper number of rotation and save 90 percent of the money going solar. Oh by the way people who use only solar really don't have a lot of kids so they run very little stuff. if you spin it slow enough and the voltage are right you can even use you old solar system after they break but my method needs the motor replaced every year or so because of the constant usage and the best one you can't even find on the market but hydraulic motors running on low speeds due just fine. the best are conveyor motor as they run all the time for years at a time. good luck and good game. oh and you can sell to the grid if you get the right setup. you can even run the motor off the solar panels as the begin to break as long as you don't over voltage the circuit. what you are doing now is a really big waste of money.

  40. I'd go for an independent off-grid system w/batteries while keeping the utility for a back up. This would require an electronic switch between the inverter and the grid power lines to the circuit breaker box and outlets. The battery charge level would automatically flip the switch when charge levels are too low to the grid source. There are solar powered clothes dryers called clotheslines and bushes 🙂

  41. I'm not going to grid tie. I'm going to build an integrating inverter with a 400 volt DC bus, which a true sine wave inverter stage, capable of 24,000 watts drives the house. That bus can be supplied through pulse width modulators, which can source batteries, photovoltaic panels. If that's not enough, Harmonic power factor corrected stages can source from the grid, using peak shaving. That means it will only draw power if the grid is above a set threshold voltage. If very worst comes to worst, a modest size portable generator can get the job done. Since I'm going to use about 60 kWh of battery capacity, the generator will be able to run right at it's brake fuel specific efficiency, since it only has to supply a continuous average. The peak surges from starting motors are easily handled by the huge battery. a 5000 watt generator could run central air conditioning through this system, where by itself, it would never drive the inrush current of the compressor. A 3500 watt will probably do, because the A/C cycles on and off, giving the generator time to build the battery back up in between runs. If you're off grid, you shouldn't be spending more than the utility hook-up fee on average per month, for fuel for a generator. If you are, you might be money ahead to add panels, perhaps a wind turbine, to get as close as possible to equilibrium with your demand. Not investing enough, could just be an expensive frustration. If you install enough battery capacity to get you through your most intensive 24 hour period, I find that that is your lowest levelized cost per kWh of stored energy, no matter which chemistry you choose. you will get the most cycle life times the kWh per cycle possible per dollar. If you have a generator, or stay on the grid as one of your charging sources, there is no need for a 72 hour reserve. That will put you past the point of diminishing returns.

  43. I would make my own little mini coal power plant and I would used tree leaves that were manufactured into coal as its fuel source. I would put scrubbers on the coal power plant stacks which removes 98% of all the pollutants. The ash left over of the coal would then be put into the roads when they are created to make them stronger and create zero waste

  44. Fields of solar panals heat up the local environment to a point habitat is altered. Wind farms are the number one killer of migratory and predator birds. But it's for the environment and makes some idiots feel good about doing something.

  45. i have 2 x pylon batteries at a much lower cost than tesler my total storage = 4.8 Kwh cost £1700.I charge these up at night using a night rate of £0.05/kwh and top them up through the day using solar …even in winter the batteries can last until 11pm at night other surplus solar goes into heating a 300l water tank using a iboost .
    i would say batteries are definitely the future considering adding another 1 or 2

  46. So they will make a truck… That's good. For some time now I've been figuring "If Tesla really wants to make money, they'll make a viable ( )1/2-ton LUV fleet-truck.". And they plan to make Class-8 semi-tractors & buses as well? Makes me look forward to the first luxury EV motor-home, built with fixed roof-top & retractable solar panels, all powering the EM-induction cook-top, water-heater & washer/clothes-dryer. Add a water collection system with reverse-osmosis treatment & UV-sterilizing, and you'll be set to survive anywhere, anytime!

I saw some pretty high numbers in the comments……I picked up 2 electric forklift batteries (90%) capacity for $1000 CAN each 2x 24 [email protected] [email protected] 6 hrs), and a 6 kW inverter charger hybrid(both AC an mppt solar charger) all in one unit for $1000….8x 335 watts solar panels for $1600 CAN……this is a pretty cheap system

Problem is we're not making efficient batteries we need or should make batteries on a nanoscale and then lair them like a voltaic pile and we could have Battery Source or a battery with a energy density of 10 x what we have now we have the processes to do such a thing we've been making semiconductor transistors instead of batteries

  50. The issue is that when the power density of dc is too high then the battery can fail as this can be observed by creating your own simple barrier and you will notice that the wattage drops off after certain point of chaining battery.

I'm currently 21 and im living with my parents under the agreement to pay rent and save for a house. i plan on going completely off grid when it comes to electricity. i want solar panels, wind turbines, and ill even make a little engine-powered hydrogen-hybrid generator to power my PC's. its not completely green, but god damn is it a good start.
