Welcome to the MOOC course on industrial safety
engineering, today I will explain to you what is the purpose of this course? and what the
participants particularly, the students will be attending this course will be learning,
its coverage, the benefits. The objective of this course is to impart
knowledge to the participants, on the different aspects and facets of engineering system safety,
focusing on tools, techniques, methodologies needed to prevent the occurrence of unsafe
facts, unsafe conditions and unsafe operations, unwanted scenarios, all those things. Basically, knowing the; or having the knowledge
of hazards and then how the hazards will ultimately lead to accidents. And the path from hazard occurrence to accident
occurrences, this will be taught through various mathematical simulation, conceptual tools
and techniques, ultimate aim is to provide intervention either preventive or mitigative
intervention, so that accidents and injuries will be minimized to the people at work and
it is built on the system concept starting from the design conceptualization, design,
then building then operation, maintenance and disposal. So, our focus will be on; primarily on the
prevention through design then the appropriate tools and techniques, the mathematics behind
it, the case studies, linking of different tools and techniques and their usefulness
to industrial situations. It will be a 12 week course and the week wise
model is given here. In the first week, we will introduce the concepts,
terminologies, some quantification and what is safety by design or prevention through
design with 5 lectures each 30 minutes of duration, followed by there will be several
hazard identification techniques like HAZOP, failure model effect analysis and preliminary
hazard analysis like this related to process, related to equipment, related to supplier,
related to human. In the third week, we will learn fault tree
and event tree analysis in detail that we will give you to learn another important technique
of accept engineering is bow tie and then collectively all those things ultimately lead
to know the risk involved in operations in processes and then how those risks can be
controlled or minimized will be; you will be learning through safety function deployment. Now, all of you know that safety and reliability
are very much related, there are a lot of overlapping mathematics, concepts and applications,
so that will be dealt in 2 weeks of 5 x 2, 10 hours duration and then we will discuss
about safety function, system safety quantification using truth table, structure function approach,
minimal cut sets etc and our approach is will include with; our approach is all pervasive
in the sense that it will consider all the component of a system including human, machine,
process, procedures, environment, technology. So, human error plays significant role there,
so we will see that how human error can be classified, quantified and analysed in 1 week,
all those knowledge ultimately, will be put in accident investigation and inspection,
all related safety programs, design, implementation and or deployment. Then as you know that hazards and related
accidents cannot be simulated in the real environment when it is obviously should not
be. And then the entire industrial situation if
we can model in the computer create the similar environment in the computer, the operations
and everything, then what will happen; we can using virtual reality, we can show that
how different hazardous situations can be generated and accordingly the training design,
redesign all possibilities can be known, so we will be giving you a brief introduction
of virtual reality application in safety engineering. And finally, which is also equally important
one is the different guidelines, rules, regulations and the management systems particular pertaining
to safety engineering will be taught to you under OSHAS 18001 and that is occupational
safety health management system. And you will be knowing some of the important
books while I will give you the lectures but to; at the beginning I think these are the
books which you must have, if you do not have, you please purchase or find it from your library
or from the net, wherever it is applicable. First of all, the probabilistic risk assessment
for engineering and scientist then industrial accident prevention that is by Heinrich. And techniques for safety management system
approach by Peterson, another book is the hazard techniques by Ericsson 2, so in nutshell,
I can tell you that this is a very very important course for all engineers particularly in today’s
environment when we are talking about industry 4.0 and we are going towards more automation
now, what will happen that we are trying to create system, which will automatically identify
the faults, detect then detect the severity, the consequences and rectify it. So, every engineer respective of the discipline,
they must know the safety engineering principles, concepts, tools, techniques, applications
all those things, so that they will become true in true sense an engineer for industries
who are pursuing industry 4.0, in addition today, this is the era of analytics, machine
learning and you will be having lot of sensors that will help you in gathering data related
to safety, reliability, maintainability all those things. If you want to analyse properly, the prerequisite
the concepts of analysing those data also, you will be given through these lectures. I hope you will enjoy it because it will be
have; it will have concepts, mathematics, applications, cases and laboratory experiment
